Current Style: Standard
The Department of Economics came into existence on 15.12.1986. The thrust areas of research are Open Economy Macroeconomics, Public Finance, International Economics, Monetary Economics, Financial Economics, Health Economics, Economics of Education and Gender Studies. There are number of projects undertaken by the faculty members funded by Reserve Bank of India, various Ministries of Govt. of Puducherry & Govt. of India, University Grants Commission, etc. Besides, faculty members have published research papers in reputed journals like Oxford Economic Papers, Economics Letters, Journal of Policy Modelling, Economic Modelling, Journal of Asian Economics, Applied Economic Letters, Applied Financial Economics, Journal of Quantitative Economics, Economic and Political Weekly, Artha Vijnana, Indian Economic Journal, Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Margin, Prajnan, etc.
The selection for P.G. and Ph.D. programmes is based on a written examination of 2 hours duration. For M.A. degree programme, the question paper is based upon the syllabus of U.G. degree course, while for Ph.D. it is based on P.G. degree course syllabus . For M.Sc. (Economics) the question paper is based on Plus Two syllabus in Economics, Mathematics and general awareness.
Several students have cleared UGC-NET and SLET examinations. Some of the students who completed P.G. programme are doing M.Phil./Ph.D. with fellowships in I.I.T., Mumbai, Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Hyderabad Central University, Institution of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai,etc. Some are employed as faculty members at various educational institutions, executives in multinational companies/banks and as civil services officials.
